It’s the ultimate green change property — an award-winning sustainable home built beneath the canopy of a rainforest.
But the real showstopper at this unique Currumbin Valley retreat for sale is an original 1960s tree house, renovated in spectacular style by the property’s current owners.
The estate at 658 Tomewin Mountain Rd is set amid 19 acres of lush rainforest with views of Mt Cougal and is marketed via an expressions of interest campaign with Ash Witty, of Harcourts BMG.
Owners Alan Wise and Hsiao-Ying Tung purchased the property for $1.475m in 2009, operating the Ananda Rainforest Retreat with a range of accommodation options and spa packages on offer.
The 244sq m main house was designed by celebrated architect Philip Follent and Denis Holland and has four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
It was named Belle House of the Year and also awarded the Gold Coast’s top industry honours after it was built in 1989.

The home blends with its incredible natural surrounds through box brush timber floors and zinc aluminium panels in the vaulted ceilings.
Clerestory windows capture light through the rainforest canopy and warm the home during the day, while clear and timber louvres promote air flow.
An entertaining deck juts out from the upper level into the trees, providing breathtaking views over the ranges, and there’s also an inviting tiled pool.
The character-filled treehouse spanning 110sq m is hidden deep in the forest. It was built in 1969 and has two bedrooms, two bathrooms including an outdoor shower and spa, a loft and beautiful stone feature walls and fireplace.
There’s also a wide rainforest observation deck, and 3km of walking tracks through the property.
Named Gaiananda Treehouse by the owners, the lodge provides a potential income stream and was advertised for short-stay holiday rentals from $395 per night.
Mr Witty said the property was surprisingly easy to maintain given its size and semi-rural location.
“It would definitely suit someone who was looking towards that tree change — someone looking to get further out from the more densely populated coastal areas, but who doesn’t want something with an enormous amount of maintenance,” he said.
“It sounds crazy but with 19 acres of rainforest, nature takes care of herself. It’s not like you’ve got hedges to clip.”
Currumbin Valley is one of QLD’s most sought-after acreage suburbs, with median house prices exceeding $1m, and a record residential sale of $4.5m set in June for a 100-year-old restored home on 10 acres.
