North Bondi duplex that cost $1.41m during Sydney Olympics has $16m price guide nowon 11/08/2021 at 11:06 AM

Raine and Horne DoubleBay/Bondi Beach principal Ric Serrao and son Christophe have interest at $16m in 165 Hastings Parade, North Bondi.

Jan and Andy Purcell remember the day back in 2000 — during the Sydney Olympics — when they snapped up what was then a dilapidated duplex at auction.

“Every man and his dog was there,” Jan said.

“It was dilapidated, unliveable … the right hand side had completely collapsed.

“It had been owned by a blind man, who’d died.”

The Purcells had just sold their building business in Brisbane and had planned to move to the Gold Coast, but had been in Sydney caring for Jan’s mum who lived in North Bondi.

“We were out for a walk enjoying the view and we spotted this, so we thought we might as well go to the auction,” Jan said.

Wake up to this

They got it for $1,410,000 — and the Gold Coast plan went out the window.

The price paid seems like a bargain when you look back now, though, as Jan points out, it took another $1 million and eight months of renovation — new foundations and a major rebuild — before they could move in.

Along with an attic, they’ve also extended the living areas by removing a sunroom and added balconies to make the most of the glorious views over Bondi Beach and the district. “It’s been absolutely beautiful,” Jan said. “We wake up and look out at this incredible ocean view and then in the evening there are the lovely lights … it’s a magical spot and we’re not leaving it easily.”

Stylish interiors

The balconies were added by current owners.

Now a rare chance awaits a savvy purchaser. In the 21 years since the Purcells saw an opportunity, Ben Buckler has become the place to be.

Raine and Horne Double Bay/Bondi Beach principal Ric Serrao and son Christophe have interest at $16 million, ahead of an August 19 auction.

“Rarely do properties with such character and views come up in the area … this could be one large home or home plus income,” Mr Serrao said.

The owners had to do a major renovation.

The property is set for August 19 auction.

In its current form, there are two separate residences: a two-level, three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with double garage; and a two-level, four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with double garage.

There is extensive roof and underhouse storage, and is within walking distance of the beach, scenic coastal walks and parks, public transport and village eateries.
