WWII Prime Minister John Curtain’s former Brunswick home sellson 15/08/2021 at 12:00 AM

John Curtin, one of Australia’s greatest prime ministers, once lived at 16 Barry St, Brunswick.

The former Brunswick home of wartime prime minister John Curtin has sold after just two weeks on the market.

The late Labor leader, who was in office from 1941 until his death in 1945, led Australia for most of World War II and is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest prime ministers.

Jellis Craig Brunswick partner Elizabeth Kelly said Mr Curtin lived at the Victorian residence during his early 20s, from 1907 until 1909.

John Curtin served as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia, in office from 1941 to his death in 1945.

But his former home has changed since his time there in the early 1900s.

The residence retains its period charm.

The updated kitchen.

Records show he also played for the Brunswick Football Club in the Victorian Football Association around the same time.

Ms Kelly said a local couple snapped up the three-bedroom property at 16 Barry St for in excess of the $1.3m asking price, before it had a chance to go to auction.

It sports a modern and updated interior behind its Hawthorn brick facade, while original mantled fireplaces and high decorative ceilings fill the home with period charm.

An open-plan dining space.

It includes the original fireplaces.

Light and bright.

“It’s the prettiest on the street,” Ms Kelly said.

“It’s got a really nice entertaining area and the landscaped backyard has a sunny northerly aspect,” Ms Kelly added.

She said the house also enjoyed a prime location near Sydney Road’s eateries and bars, trams, Royal Park, Melbourne Zoo, schools and universities.

Mr Curtin was known for his government’s significant expansion of social services including improvements to the pension, and had the Canberra suburb of Curtin and Curtin University named after him.

An outdoor courtyard.

You can also enter the home from the rear.
