THE winners of last year’s series of The Block have spent their cash prize wisely by buying their first home in the Noosa hinterland — mortgage-free.

Brisbane couple Jimmy and Tam Wilkins won the 2020 series of the Channel 9 show, taking home the biggest cash prize in Australian television history.

Winners of The Block 2020, Brisbane couple Tam and Jimmy Wilkins, have bought their first home in Pomona.

They became the first millionaires in the show’s 13-year reign after their 1950s Palm Springs-inspired house in Brighton, Victoria, sold at auction for $4.256 million — $966,000 over reserve.

The result meant Jimmy and Tam also netted a $100,000 winner’s cheque, taking their total winnings on the show to $1.066 million.

The home is on a large, corner block in the Noosa hinterland township of Pomona.

“The thought of walking away with a hundred thousand dollars blew our minds, but to walk away with a million dollars is life-changing,” the couple said in a statement at the time.

“This means we can buy a house without a mortgage, that’s the Australian dream.”

The character home has wide, covered verandas.

But rather than splashing out on a fully-renovated trophy home, the couple has spent just $610,000 on a renovator on a big corner block in Pomona.

The three-bedroom, one-bathroom character home sits on a 936 sqm fully-fenced block and features cathedral ceilings with exposed timber beams, hardwood timber floors, French doors and wide covered verandas.

Jimmy and Tam plan to renovate this character home in Pomona.

Jimmy and Tam took to social media to announce the news of their purchase, writing to their 48,000 Instagram followers: “Sooo we have been waiting to get out of lockdown to take this photo and tell you guys the exciting news … we have finally bought our very first family home aaaand it’s a renovator, this beauty has so much character but we can’t wait to get stuck in and put our touch on it … stay tuned”.

The home has cathedral ceilings with exposed timber beams.

The property was sold by Alisa Wythes of Wythes Real Estate.

The listing describes the home as ‘a fantastic property for those seeking a character home without the maintenance in a brilliant location in the Noosa Hinterland’.

Meantime, the Brighton home the couple won The Block with finally sold in June for about $4 million.
